Photoshop, anti-flash February 21, 2010
Happy Birthday, Photoshop! Well, recently it's photoshop's bday. Someone says it's on Feb 19, but I'm not so sure about that, but it should be some date around. Anyway photoshop is 20 years old already! And it's indeed one of the most important applications. I'm lucky to have been using photoshop for many years. Let me see.. It should be 10. Yep, I started self-learning photoshop in F.1, that's 2000, and I remember the first version I used was 5.0. Photoshop's latest version is CS4 (version 11.0), so I've witnessed the changes of seven generations of the software.. That's exciting, isn't it?
The early works I created with photoshop was creepy though.. Well, we all make mistakes, don't we? The most important thing would be for us to avoid making PSD, short for Photoshop disasters.. I know my work today also has room for improvement. But I guess being an amateur only it's more important for me to diversify my skills in other softwares, such as AI, right?
Anyway, you guys should know that my favourite version is still CS3, because I think it runs faster on my mac. Let's see if things will change when CS5 is released, which is written in 64-bit cocoa code. And hopefully by then I'll run PS on a new MBP?

Despite having discovered this safari plugin long time ago, I only adopted it recently. It's called ClickToFlash, which disables all flash on a web site until you click on the button. I used to think it's unnecessary, and inconvenient, to disable flash on desktop, so why change my mind so suddenly? This is probably attributable to recent iPad commentaries which keep instilling the idea that flash is slow, power-exhausting and "old technology". And it's not totally wrong. I mean, I've been using my iPhone for two years, and I haven't encountered many instances when I needed flash on iPhone. So, this is what safari-minus-flash looks like:
If you'd like to further reduce the reliance on flash, go to this youtube page and enter the HTML5 beta programme. This enables you to watch youtube videos with your browser directly decoding H.264 videos. This is fast.
Essay.. February 20, 2010
Well, I haven't had much achievement during the chinese new year. I only read a limited number of readings, I haven't written any RPD essay, I have only blogged once.. One of the few things I'm proud of is what I've prepared to tutor. Yes, A-Level is coming. This year, I promise you guys that I have not enrolled into any exam. But given that my student really needs to do better in writing, I've prepared a lot of materials. I even tried to forecast the writing topic and wrote a sample essay myself. I'm sure you'll benefit from that if you're to take UE exam soon.. And remember, if you're one of P Chan's students, read as many sample essays by Nicky/Joyce/Paulina as possible - their works are my personal favourite.
So, if you're interested, I don't mind sharing my essay.. But mind you, I've never said I don't make mistakes.
Btw, a recent quote: "真係好唔明點解依加d人拍拖要叫咩豬豬啊..baby..你唔好叫佢豬扒? 啊!或者叫embryo都得架..點解叫embryo...因為embryo冇腦架嘛.!" - Simon Chiang Windows Phone 7 Series February 16, 2010
I seldom look at microsoft products these days, let alone appreciating any of it. But their latest effort of the Windows Phone really impresses me. Constantly, I'm wondering why Apple hasn't made iPhone work in a way similar to the HTC-modified android, which is content-oriented rather than app-oriented. In the iPhone, every app works independently, without having a page that integrates everything you need. The HTC-modified android works better by integrating contacts together, so that you can look at a friend's facebook, tweets, emails, etc. in a single page. But the android doesn't have as many apps as the iPhone does, and the concept of being content-oriented isn't mature enough on the android.
Microsoft's latest effort is different. This time, it really tells people its vision on future smartphones, and I really like the hubs idea. It integrates everything you need in one panorama page, and then there're different panoramas that group different things you need, e.g. "People" is one page, "Music+Video" is another, "Office" is another, … And they've finally given up copying Mac's glassy icons, which originates from the dashboard widget style first appeared in Tiger. Instead, what are in the home screen of Windows Phone 7 are plain boxes of different sizes, showing the most useful information in different apps. There's no gloss now. It somehow makes iPhone's glassy icons so 2009. The new UI in Windows Phone 7 seems more like the future.
Still, being an iPhone fan, I guess I'll stick with iPhone, and hope that Apple will come up with something even more innovative in iPhone OS 4.
BIG day February 13, 2010
So, today is a big day to many. It's CNY eve, and we all have to do some last-minute shopping before new year. And it's also a day prior to V Day, so lots of people are prepping their last-minute gifts to their valentines. And of course, to me, this day is so big because it's the 7th year I've been blogging in this site, K&C.
If I'm to conclude my performance in this site, I'd say there's been ups and downs. In recent days I seems to have written more, and I'd attribute this to the fact that I'm more sad nowadays, therefore being more emotional. Have you guys heard that for the creative people - artists, authors, musicians, miseries in their lives fuel up their inspiration? This is not proved, but it's a very real experience for me.
No matter what, blogging is still an indispensable part of my life. So I've constantly updated this site, no matter in terms of content and reading experience. I've added a script so that tweets can now be read in this site, and this proved to be a good decision. Tweeting is much easier than blogging (in K&C, where I have a high demand for my writing standard). And it's always nice to let everyone know what I'm up to through reading the tweets. And whenever I'd like to make what I've tweeted more permanent, I can always incorporate a group of tweets into a blog post. This way we get the best of both worlds.
And what about my favourite post for this year? I don't know, probably I can't find one because whatever I blog, it's part of my life, and it'd be too pathetic to like/hate a particular part of life. The only absolutely true thing we should do in life, would be to keep moving on. So, are you ready for that?
Finally, as mentioned before, there's one slogan in our anniversary theme pix: Where art lovers meet for the past seven years. I'm not sure if everyone agrees that things here are art. Sometimes, I have to admit that some work is sub-standard art. No matter what, I guess we all love art, and I'll always continue to blog with one principle: to bring great art to my readers.
Happy anniversary, happy chinese new year.
No patient, 7th anniversary approaching February 11, 2010
Neither of my two patients showed up today, and I have virtually done nothing other than tutoring today. So, tutoring has become one of the most meaningful things I have done this week.. This is sad, isn't it? Let's hope that tmr's patient will come back.
One thing you guys should notice is that this site will soon come to its 7th anniversary. I've decided to try something different for the theme pix. How am I going to celebrate the 7th anniversary? Well, perhaps in the same way as I celebrate V Day..
And I bought a nice new little pencil case from muji yesterday.
More quotes February 8, 2010
If you've read some articles talking about some kinds of annoying facebook friends, I'll surely become one of them - I always like using quotes as my status. Some of them are quotes from others, some of them are created by me. Like this one:
"I skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been." - Wayne Gretzky, ice hockey player, to represent my views on design.
Here's another one from the latest episode of Desperate Housewives (on sorting and recycling garbage):
Angie Bolen: … What will it (the environment) be like for our grandchildren?
Mrs. Krinsky: My son is shooting blanks, and my daughter likes the ladies. Grandkids are the least of my concerns.
One from Mandy Lee, during my dental o-camp two years ago: "(Hong) Kong U 無頹hall架,只有頹人!"
And finally, one quote from me, a derivative of Mandy Lee's, on teaching oral hygiene instructions to patients: "世上無刷唔到嘅牙,只有刷唔到牙嘅人"Alternative February 7, 2010
Time flew in the past week. Perhaps it's mainly because I was sick again. This time, I guess it's because of gastroenteritis. I had fever on Wednesday, and symptoms didn't subside until Friday. Anyway I feel better now..
On Wed night I had considered going to QM to see the doctor. But given that I know they wouldn't be focusing their attention on me, I decided to seek alternative. Luckily, I found this on the internet. Thanks to that, I'm fine now.
February February 2, 2010
So, it's February, a month for relaxing. This is because there's going to be a one-week holiday for CNY. I'll not share much of that joy though, because I'll probably need work on the seven RPD essays, which I haven't started working on. Well?
I was lucky, because I got mister donut as a souvenir from Taipei. Wow, there're five of them!
Another joyful event today is that we were finally able to meet Martin, who just came back from Australia, graduated. We had 金滿庭, which is good.
PS There's been (56037-53347) 2690 visits in January. Given that it's not realistic at all, I'm not counting this as a formal result. Thanks to all those who visited this month, but I guess there wasn't so many visits. (Could the increase in number be due to the new generation browsers' speed dial screen?) But c'mon, K&C considers visits from the same IP as a new one only every 30 minutes. It's fair, isn't it?
