New job March 31, 2008
So, another week, another new problem. This week is going to be a busy one, because first of all, we're going to have a full day tomorrow, with a lecture in the morning and lab session in the afternoon.. Lab!! I hate it. I'll appreciate if there's no lab report to hand in though. Anyway we also need to work on our Chinese project, which will be due next week. And, I got a new job. The student lives in Sai Ying Pun, so hopefully it won't spend too much of my time.. The pay's not bad, that's why I agree to tutor 3 days a week. That's going to significantly reduce the time we see each other, but I hope it'll be all fine.
A productive Sunday March 30, 2008
Unlike many of my Sundays staying at home alone, this Sunday has been spent quite productively. I woke up quite late, though - at around noon. I then worked on the poster as requested by Annie. It didn't take long, because I almost copied everything from the video I found. Anyway I then searched for jobs on tutorial web sites. It's difficult. Sometimes the wage is too low, sometimes the pay is good but I'm requested to teach AMath.. AMATH! No, thx.
I ate at home before going back to hall. To make this week more special, I did not go back by Gold Chick van. I took 970. I was lucky enough to get on one that didn't have much passengers. So I saved $3 to go back to hall~
上門補習 March 29, 2008
Well, that's my profile on my agents' web sites. My words are copyrighted by law, so don't duplicate or imitate it. As for the photo, "why are you putting this one?" It's because I want to look more reliable with my tiredness... Anyway, the main point for posting it here is that I badly need more job right now. So, please, if there's any (better) case, please refer it to me. I prefer students in English schools, preferrably CE level and living in the vicinity of HKU. As for the wage, well, please call me.
Btw, I changed our theme pix today (like finally). I hope u'll like it.
Lost & found March 28, 2008
"失去了才懂得珍惜" This is very true. Luckily I don't have to lose it forever. Well, did I mention that I dropped my iPhone on the floor last time? A worse thing occured - the earpiece didn't speak! So how am I supposed to fix it?
Fortunately, it turned out that the phone wasn't dead. Something happened with the earphone jack that the phone thought the earphone was still plugged in the jack. It's all fine now, after I discovered the problem and fixed it. I treasure my phone even more now, because during the time I thought it was dead, I was terribly troubled as no other phone could compare with iPhone even if I had the money for it. So...
T2 today was not bad, but I think I still need time to catch up. April is soon coming, which means exan is coming in two months. Let's work hard then.
Trauma March 25, 2008
No, no trauma occured on me physically. But mentally I'm badly injured. For the third time, I dropped my iPhone on the floor today, and finally, a scar is left on its chrome border..
I blame myself for my carelessness. I've always considered my iPhone a perfect one, but then it's now imperfect. What am I supposed to do? Someone pls help : (
New layout March 24, 2008
Well, many of you should notice another change in fonts in this web site. Well, because we're viewing this site on a computer screen, sans-serif seems to be more user-friendly. Moreover, as I've mentioned in Mar 12's entry, my modified font styles (with a mac) does not look exactly the same as it is expected on windows. That's why I've decided to adopt something old, something new.
What's readopted is Trebuchet MS as the default font for all paragraph texts. But I've increased the line height in order to make paragraphs easier to read. And then a title for each day's entry has become a routine in K&C, but I did not use trebuchet for titles because I found it not aesthetically perfect when enlarged. I decided to use Calibri, a new font that comes with every copy of Office 2007 and beyond, and Windows Vista. So finally what I see now is more similar to what you guys see in Windows. And I hope this minor update can significantly enhance your experience.
Btw, it's Monday now, and it's time to get back to work. Let's do some serious revision in this module, ok?
Hot pot again March 22, 2008
Yep, in a week's time I had my second hot pot dinner, this time with dental friends. Being with friends is fun, having hot pot is even better. Eight of us went to Tak Hing TST East last night to enjoy our latest re-u. The food standard at Tak Hing remained high, so as our mood throughout the night. The price was also satisfactory. So, shall we have more hot pots from now on?
As for today, I need to work despite today being a public holiday. Sooooooooo sad, huh? "Not as sad as the loss of M49 right?" My harsh dental friends must be saying this.
Alternatives March 18, 2008
As some of you may have noticed, I didn't go to practical session today. Instead, I had a haircut at Esprit. Yep, I'm back. What's more, it's FW's Esprit this time, and it was Dickson who cut for me. "Long time no see," he said. Indeed. But I'm not returning to Kenny anymore, so will I see Dickson more? We'll see..
Anyway I cut it quite short this time, as advised by the doctor. Well, doc, anything but shave it all. Agnes seems to be quite satisfied with my new/readopted hairstyle, what about you?
We then went to City U for interview. I wasn't given an interview, though. Well, I miss all that. It's fun. Sometimes I'm astonished by the strong candidates' performance, but most of the time I'm amused by others' poor interview skills.. Hummm.. Sometimes their interview skills may be good, but they can't be shown without good oral English. I'd therefore say it's of utmost importance that HK changes its language policy asap.
Vera Yip March 17, 2008
Our new module begins today. Since a very young age, students are used to consider a new school period a new beginning. We hope for studying hard on new topics, while also catching up what we've missed before. Only a handful of us succeed. Most of the time we just give up after finding that to catch up is so hard.. I've had this thought since module 1. But I never caught up. Anyway this module is, after all, a new beginning, with a new facilitator to bring us some new perspectives, and a new group that, hopefully, can ignite some sparks for serious and constructive discussions. What's more, exam is coming in less than 3 months, so let's hope that I can catch up.
Talking about our new facilitator, Vera Yip, things are really insteresting. "I used to teach both medicine and dentistry. But then Medicine switched to PBL, I decided not to be involved, so I switched to purely dental. And then Dental switched to PBL,..." she said. (Well, sometimes we just can't help..)
"So, let's begin with Stephanie. Stef, what do you want to tell us?" She asked. "Except that you studied in KGV?" She continued. (What the..)
Finally it was my turn. "I live in a dorm, Lee Shau Kee Hall," I told her. "And you live on the 12/F, right?" She queried. "How do you know?" I finally couldn't restrain myself from asking. "I'll tell you why.." She said.
Well, these are just some mysterious though interesting stuff during our self-introduction session. Vera turns out to be a good facilitator, just as Cto has told us. Oh, btw, I think I made a mistake in the first email I sent her - I addressed her as "Mrs Yip".. Well, sorry, doctor.
This monday is deemed to be a busy day. After our tutorial in the morning and a relatively relaxing lunch with dental friends, we went to Run Run Shaw and helped in the dental exhibition. The workload was not heavy, and the return was fruitful. I got myself three packs of toothpaste, five toothbrushes and three packs of floss. But this is nothing compared to others. Melody, for example, took a whole set of 12 toothbrushes, numerous dental floss and countless toothpaste. Ivan and Vincent were as aggressive as Melody, if not even more. Guys, what are you doing with 12 boxes of toothpaste that will eventually expire?
I'm supposed to have my haircut at CB afterwards, but sadly, once again, I was fooled by Kenny. In light of this, I'm not going to visit him anymore. I don't give a damn even he returns to Esprit now.. I can turn back to Dickson. So I just waited to meet Thomas afterwards. We dined at Steak Expert, where two foreigners who thought Steak Expert was really steak expert in HK came. We enjoyed ourselves though.
Farewell M49 March 16, 2008
To be so sad about the cancellation of a bus route sounds crazy. But all these make sense when the route concerned is so important and convenient to you. I have exactly this kind of experience with M49.
Ever since I entered HKU, I've been a regular passenger of M49. At first I was amazed at how fast it brings me from hall to Central. And then when I found that it also goes from HK Station to Cyberport via Pokfulam, I felt like I can't live my U-life without it. I travel on Tung Chung line a lot, so the easiest and fastest way to go back to hall is by this bus. It is conveniently located just outside HK Station, so the convenience can never be compared even with buses at The Forum. I've never travelled back to hall with other buses at HK station. When it's too late, I just take the taxi. Gosh, how am I supposed to live without M49?
Because this bus is so important, I feel as if I'm going to lose a friend. That's why I'm treating it like one. I chose to go back to hall with the MTR tonight, so that I can say goodbye to M49. I didn't take the last bus, though. I took the second last. There weren't more people to take the bus on its very last night, nor did the driver improve his driving attitude despite it being the last time he drove this route. There were some guys with cameras at the station, though. They're probably just hard core bus fans (instead of being a loyalist to M49). I did take one picture of the bus, but I didn't take it seriously. With so many bus fans with tripods and pro cameras, why should I bother taking good pix?
So, the bus departed, and there were no fireworks, no champagne for celebration.. Like all things happening in our lives, it just comes and goes. I'm not that insane to miss a bus forever, but the convenience M49 has brought to me and the memories of the datings before I take the bus back to hall will always remain in my mind.
Perhaps there's one more reason for me to me in love with this bus route - "M49", the name itself is cool, isn't it?
海豚, etc.; hot pot with 7Ders March 15, 2008
Finally our clinical week has come to an end. Sometimes I'd think that it's been a boring week; now I think it's not that bad.. At lesat we're told more about what's going to happen in the following 4 years. The week was poorly organized, though. What we had to do generally was walking around, guessing what others were doing.. Sometimes there were exceptions, though. Like on Tuesday we paired up and worked on each others' plaque. And an even better experience occured on Thursday when we attended H.K. Yip's briefing session with the year-5's and subsequently went to polyclinic for observation. Dolphin cared about his students enough to stay in the clinic and supervise, while also explaining things to us. Suddenly I learnt one thing - whether something or somebody is "good" or not does not depend only on that subject. A dentist cannot succeed without a DSA that knows exactly how to work with him, the fastest computer cannot be fully utilized without the best programmer.. KMB Chan is good, but his tutorials fail with a group that doesn't speak; Dolphin is a very busy tutor, but he really cares in the clinic. What's going to happen when we meet V. Yip? Well, we'll see.
* * *
I had a reunion with the dear 7Ders today. As always, we had hot pot at San Po Kong; as always we did not meet until 9, when the late evening session started. Reunion itself with la salle people alone was fun, and to make things even better Long Fat today wasn't too busy. The food quality was higher than normal, and we were noiser than ever. More people showed up than expected. Perhaps we were really too eager to see one another.. Anyway thx you all for making a wonderful night. See you soon.
Cont'd clinical week March 12, 2008
There's finally something of interest in my dental life that drives me writing my blog. Well, we visited OMFS (oral & maxillofacial surgery) today. Everything there was bloody or not bloody at all. By not at all, I mean most of the time the doctors tell the patient it's not necessary to have the tooth removed yet, ie. sending the patient home. We did see some surgical procedures, though. A man had an infection at his wound after wisdom tooth extraction, and the doctors released his pus. To some, the scene was disgusting. To us, it was exciting and, well, magnificent. Kind of insane, huh? But it was, and the fact that one day we'll be doing the same is the only reason that drives me on during my ridiculous BDS I.
Btw, it's time that I explain to the vast majority of my visitors why I'm using the new font and style in K&C since Nov 2007. Click the pix below and you'll know why. While Safari displays my new font style so beautifully, IE/windows-based firefox completely ruin it. Any remedy? As far as I know, there're two. Windows version of Safari 3 should display web pages exactly like what you see on a mac. Or, well, why not switch to a Mac directly?
Clinical week March 11, 2008
Our clinical week began yesterday. Actually there isn't much "clinical" except that we are going to spend our whole week in different clinics in PP. Yesterday we observed a Year-5 reporting to a doctor after treatment, today we walked around in polyclinic, looking at what our seniors were doing. What's lucky is that I finally see what I'll be like a year later. Our seniors are all working very professionally in clinic, and hopefully I'll be doing the same..
What happened this morning was more interesting, though. We had a session on "plaque awearness". Some student dental hygenists explained to us the differences among various dental products, as well as how to use plaque disclosing agents.. So we were asked to form groups and take turns to act as the dentist and patient. My first ever "patient" was Shirley, and what I did was ask her to sit on the dental chair, I lowered it, used the mirror and the probe to try getting some plaque out of her gingival region. And then I applied some disclosing agent on her teeth.. And after all that I brushed her teeth.. Well, Shirley, thx for being my "patient". Thank God you're still alive..
This clinical week is going to be a boring one, but I guess it's important. Maybe next week when I return to PBL, I'll miss what I'm doing this week.
Cheung Chau March 6, 2008
Finally, five of us are back from Cheung Chau. Actually it wasn't a long trip. We enjoyed ourselves, but we didn't appreciate the "antique" and "simple" style of the flat we booked. This made us refuse to sleep in the bed; instead we tried to stay awake as much as possible in the night. We played mah jong, we MOed Ronald (it was supposed to be Ivan..)... I am glad I've now mastered more skills of mah jong.
So what happened before we did all that? Well, we kept eating once we were in Cheung Chau. We also barbequed in the yard in front of our flat.. Talking about barbeque, we were all experts, but perhaps just in a certain aspects. Cto, for example, was BBBQ majoring in bread grilling, I was BBBQ (Marshmallow), ... Perhaps one day we'll become MBBQ, and subsequently PhD in BBQ.
Farewell, Martin March 4, 2008
I've made a promise that I'd sleep at least 8 hours a day this week, plus no coffee. That's quite challenging to me, isn't it? After all, I haven't been doing this since F.2. Anyway I hope I can fulfill my promise in order not to let anyone down..
So, we had our last gathering this afternoon with Martin. What's different is that MK joined us today, which is rare. What did we do then? We yum cha at Tak Hing. It turned out that Tak Hing is good both at hot pot and dim sum. And because the three gentlemen were all late, we did not meet until 2 (it was supposed to be 1). Well, nvm. I enjoyed myself blogging at McDonald's this afternoon for yesterday's entry. (Ya, I admit that mar 3's entry was written today) Our gathering was enjoyable too. Martin, don't be sad going back. You have had a fruitful long long vacation in HK. Go back and work hard. See you in July/November.
PS Oh I forgot to update the popularity index. The index as of today is 34406, which makes 434 (34406-33972) visits to this site from Feb 1 till today. On average there are 13.2 visits daily. Hmm.. It's slightly better than last month, but still a long way to go to reach the figure when I was in F.6. I'll work hard on this..
Back to FW March 3, 2008
It's been a long time since my last visit to FW. Well, not exactly.. I still drop by and have coffee at PCC occasionally, but for some "serious wandering" and even movie at AMC, it's really rare these days.. Anyway thanks to our cancelled bike trip, we visited FW today. I fulfilled two of my wishes in this way: serious wandering and movie. And, as usual, we also had coffee at PCC.. Why PCC? I may have told some of you that I've really visited starbucks too much these days. Plus: fw's starbucks sucks.
So, apart from wandering and coffee, we watched Enchanted. It's a bit late, but I'm glad that I didn't miss this movie in cinema. Perhaps the previous movie we watched, PS, was too bad; perhaps I really miss going to AMC; perhaps Enchanted was really such a good movie that I really love it. If you still haven't watched it in theatre, I guess there's still about a one-week window. Try getting someone to watch with you~
